How to order low fat, vegetarian food at an Indian restaurant.

There are many dishes in ethnic Indian cuisine which are vegetarian, low fat and of course caters the taste of people all over the world.

Indian meals are based around rice or bread served with an assortment of savory dishes.

Try one of the many varieties of Indian bread like "naan" or 'roti" or 'phulka" . Instead of or in addition to the bread, you could try some for the rice preparations like  "Pulao" or "Vegetable Biriyani" which are mostly fine varieties of rice (mostly Basmati rice) mixed with different herbs.

To accompany the bread/rice, start with something simple - you can ask for any of lentil ("Daal") preparations - one of the most popular is the Daal Makhani which is a dry style. Make sure you tell them the spice level since they can get quite spicy.  Then to try out more vegetarian dishes, ask for the "baingan bharta" which combines roasted egg plants with a different spices, or "Palak Paneer" (home made cheese drenched in a spicy puree of spinach). And finally the dessert - try the "Kheer" which is a kind of aromatic and sweet rice pudding.
