Preparation :

  • Wash the daals and cook till well done in a pressure cooker (approx 4 whistles)

  • When the steam in the pressure cooker has released, remove the lid, mix the daals well and mash lightly with the back of a laddle.

  • Heat 2tbsp ghee in a skillet. Sauté chopped onions in ghee till they turn translucent.

  • Make a paste of the spice powders in little water and add it to the onions. Stir and cook for a couple of mins - this is to roast the spices.

  • Add cooked daal, mix well and cook for 5 mins. Turn off the heat.

  • Now in another skillet heat 1 tbsp ghee. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. After the seeds splutter, add curry leaves, chopped green chillies, ginger & garlic - stir well and fry these for a few seconds. Then pour this on the cooked daal.

  • Add lemon juice and chopped cilantro and mix well.

  • Serve hot with roti or rice.

Note :

  • This can also be made without a pressure cooker - in which case, soak the daals for a couple of hours and cook in an open pan with a little water. Start with little water and keep adding more as the daals cook.

  • Goes well with ghee rice!
