Recipes - Veggies - Curry

Here is an easy lentil recipe - Daal (Dal) curry.  It goes well with roti / Indian bread or rice.

Daal Curry (Lentil Curry)

Indian Daal Curry

Ingredients :

This dish can be made with 1 cup of Masoor daal or 1/4 cup each of the 4 daals mentioned below.
Toor Daal 1/4 Cup
Moong Daal (without green outer skin) 1/4 Cup
Masoor Daal 1/4 Cup
Chana Daal 1/4 Cup
Green Chillies 3 or 4 nos
Ginger Paste 1/2 tsp
Yellow onion 1 medium
Red Chilly Powder 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder 1/4 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1/2 tsp
Cilantro/coriander leaves

1 sprig

Water

As required

Butter

3 tbsp

Salt

to taste

Preparation :

  • Wash the daals and cook in little water (just enough to cover the daal) till well done in a pressure cooker (approx 3 whistles)

  • When the steam in the pressure cooker has released, remove the lid, mix the daals well.

  • Heat butter in a skillet. Add cumin seeds. After the seeds splutter, add onion, green chillies chopped and ginger paste. Sauté till onion turns translucent.

  • Add the spice powders, daal and a little water and mix well. Bring to a boil. Let it simmer for about 3 minutes.

  • Add cooked daal, mix well and cook for 5 mins. Turn off the heat.

  • Now in another skillet heat 1 tbsp ghee. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. After the seeds splutter, add curry leaves, chopped green chillies, ginger & garlic - stir well and fry these for a few seconds. Then pour this on the cooked daal.

  • Garnish with chopped cilantro.

  • Serve hot with roti or rice.

Note :

  • This can also be made without a pressure cooker - in which case, soak the daals for a couple of hours and cook in an open pan with a little water. Start with little water and keep adding more as the daals cook.
