Preparation :

  • Make a spice mix by grinding cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, fennel and peppercorns.

  • Cut beef into 1 inch cubes and mix in the spice mix, chopped yellow onion, thinly sliced tomatoes, green chillies slit in halves, ginger paste, garlic paste, chilly powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt.

  • Optional - Marinate the beef in all the above ingredients for 1/2 hour to 1 hour.

  • Half cook the beef in a pressure cooker.

  • Heat 2 tbsp oil in a wide flat-bottomed pan. After the oil heats up really well, add the mustard seeds and top the pan with a splatter screen or lid.

  • After the mustards seeds pop, add curry leaves, thinly sliced red onions and ghee.

  • After the onions turn brown, add the coconut pieces and saute for 2 mins.

  • Now add the beef and cook till the gravy dries up and beef turns dark blackish-brown. Keep stirring the beef often to make sure the beef gets coated with the gravy uniformly.

  • At the end add 1 tbsp lemon juice.

  • Optional - Garnish with thinly sliced 1 inch long red onions.

  • Serve hot with rice.

Note :

  • To make this curry less spicy, reduce the peppercorns to 5 and green chillies to 2.

  • This dish can be made with mutton too - preferably goat meat.
