Recipes - Meat - Mutton

 
 
 

 This is an authentic mutton curry recipe from the south Indian state - Kerala. This dish can be be made with either lamb or goat meat. Some people do not like the smell or taste of lamb meat - they prefer goat meat which has comparatively a more subtle taste. This dish is best served hot with rice.
 

 

 
 

Mutton Curry

 

 
     
 
   

 

 

Ingredients :

 
Mutton(goat meat) 2.5 lbs Cinnamon

1 inch

Pearl Onion 1 cup Cloves

4 nos

Yellow Onion 2 medium Cardamom

2 nos

Tomato 1 medium Cumin seeds

1 tsp

Ginger minced 1.5 tbsp Black Peppercorn

4 nos

Garlic minced 1 tbsp Coriander leaves

2 sprigs

Dried Red Chillies 8 to 10 Curry Leaves

8 to 10

Coriander Seeds 2 tsp Coconut Oil

2 tbsp

Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp Salt

to taste

Green Chillies 4 grated coconut (optional)

Preparation :

 
  • Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a skillet
  • Fry the dried red chillies and coriander seeds separately in the skillet and keep aside.
     
  • Now put in peppercorn, cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom and cumin seeds and fry these together and keep aside.
     
  • Sauté the pearl onions cut in halves till they brown.
     
  • Grind all the above ingredients.
     
  • Mix the mutton pieces with turmeric, salt and the ground mixture.
     
  • Optional - marinate the mutton for 1/2 hour to 1 hour.
     
  • Cook the meat in a pressure cooker.
     
  • Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a skillet and then add the sliced yellow onions, chopped garlic and ginger and sauté till onion turns brown.
     
  • Add sliced tomatoes and cook till they soften.
     
  • Add the cooked mutton, mix well and bring to a boil.
     
  • Cook till it turns brown and the gravy has reduced to desired amount.
     
  • Garnish with curry leaves and chopped coriander leaves.
     
  • Optional - 1/4 cup of fried grated coconut can be also added as garnish.
     
  • Serve hot with rice or chapati.
